Summer Term Classes
Week 1: 12th May – Flamenco (Drawing: Pencil, Pastel Pencil)
This session will focus on capturing the dynamic movement and expressive gestures of flamenco dancers. Students will explore the use of pencil and pastel pencils to create dramatic contrasts, flowing fabrics, and intricate details of traditional flamenco costumes. We will study how posture and gesture convey emotion in dance-inspired artwork.

Week 2: – 19th May – Mime (Marcel Marceau, Nola Rae – Pastel)
This week, we will examine the art of mime, using pastels to create expressive portraits inspired by famous mime artists such as Marcel Marceau and Nola Rae. Emphasis will be placed on facial expressions, monochromatic tones, and the dramatic use of light and shadow to highlight the performative aspect of mime.

Week 3: 2nd June – Hot Air Balloons(Watercolour)
A colourful session exploring the movement of hot air balloons drifting through clear and cloudy skies. Students will learn techniques for painting soft, blended skies, as well as how to achieve the effect of light shining through fabric. Composition will also be discussed to create a sense of height and perspective.

Week 4: 9th June – Summer Still Life (Watercolour)
This week focuses on floral still life, capturing the vibrancy of summer flowers using watercolour. Techniques will include wet-on-wet blending for soft petals, dry brush techniques for texture, and composition tips to create balanced arrangements.

Week 5: 16th June – Industrial Buildings (Acrylic)
A shift in theme to an urban landscape. We will explore industrial buildings and city structures, working in acrylic to create bold, textured pieces. Techniques such as palette knife work and layering will be introduced to add depth and realism to the paintings.

Week 6: 23rd June – Seaside Still Life (Acrylic)
A seaside themed session featuring still life objects such as buckets and spades and animals such as starfish and seahorses. Students will experiment with acrylic painting techniques to depict textures like weathered wood, sand, and water reflections. We will also look at the charm of beach huts and how to capture their bold colours.

Week 7: 30th June – Tennis (Acrylic)
On the 1st day of Wimbledon Tennis, we will paint a tennis-themed still life and a classic British summer scene: strawberries and cream. Students can choose between acrylic for a bold, textured approach or watercolour for a softer, more fluid rendering. Emphasis will be placed on composition and how to create realistic textures for fruit and cream.

Week 8: 7th July – Plein Air Sketching
An outdoor session where we will practice plein air sketching in Cannizaro Park, Wimbledon. Students will work on quick observational sketches, capturing natural scenery, trees, flowers, and park landscapes. Various media can be used, including pencil, pastel, or watercolour.
